Mr. G's Spanish classes have been learning about Dia de los Muertos which is celebrated in Mexico and Central America on October 31st through November 2nd.
Dia de los Muertos is a time to remember and honor loved ones that have passed. In Guatemala people create gigantic kites with messages to their deceased loved ones. In El Salvador people go to the graveyard to clean the tombs and decorate with flowers. In Mexico, where Día de los Muertos is the biggest holiday of the year, people set up ofrendas (altars) with pictures of deceased loved ones, candles, marigold flowers, and food. It is through the preparation of kites, foods, and flower arranging, that people talk about and remember their loved ones.
With the assistance of Spanish 1 students (flower making and coloring), Spanish 3 (in charge of the Día de los Muertos banner), Spanish 2 classes have created Dia de los Muertos ofrendas. They are set up for viewing by the office, next to the awards wall.
